The X Factor and Doctor Who have both returned to our screens in recent weeks, which can mean only one thing: summer is over and it’s pretty much nearly Christmas. Before too long, it’ll be dark at 4pm and my leisure time will be spent strictly indoors.

This was going to be a preview of the Liverpool Biennial, but sometimes the cultural news agenda changes. Sometimes, all it takes is a talking poodle to stop me in my writing tracks and force me to reassess my subject matter.

The late 90s and early-2000s were prime times to be a quirky female popstar. Post-girl power pop was a diverse and rich genre that skipped between saccharine-sweet sounds to angsty guitar-based alt rock.
Alas, few of the era’s stand-out stars have remained in the spotlight. Some reached wee-soaked ends, whilst others decided that working in a café would be preferable to churning out hits.

Even as a grown up, it is hard to escape those “back to school” blues that kick in come early September. The best way to deal with them is to plan an action-packed programme of cool things to see and do. And London Design Festival (14-23 September) makes an ideal starting point.
