The Best Books: Feminism

Forget Naomi Wolf and her vagina, here are some of the best books to start building your cuntini-free feminist library:

What You Should Be Watching This Autumn

The X Factor and Doctor Who have both returned to our screens in recent weeks, which can mean only one thing: summer is over and it’s pretty much nearly Christmas. Before too long, it’ll be dark at 4pm and my leisure time will be spent strictly indoors.

Top Dog Model on ITV2

This was going to be a preview of the Liverpool Biennial, but sometimes the cultural news agenda changes. Sometimes, all it takes is a talking poodle to stop me in my writing tracks and force me to reassess my subject matter.

Five Forgotten Female Popstars of the Past

The late 90s and early-2000s were prime times to be a quirky female popstar. Post-girl power pop was a diverse and rich genre that skipped between saccharine-sweet sounds to angsty guitar-based alt rock. Alas, few of the era’s stand-out stars have remained in the spotlight. Some reached wee-soaked ends, whilst others decided that working in a café would be preferable to churning out hits.

Doctor Who is Back with "Asylum of the Daleks"

Tomorrow is going to be an epic, wonderful day.  Not only is there a plethora of Paralympics activity, not only will it be one week to go until Lady Gaga's concert in London, but it is the RETURN OF DOCTOR WHO. We last left the Doctor in "The Wedding of River Song". Since then there has been Comic Con a...

Be More Swedish With Rekorderlig's Swedish School

Does anyone else play the dumb game where they pick the nationality that they’d most prefer to be? Until earlier this year, my answer was always French. And yes, it would involve wearing a Breton top whilst riding a bike with French Bulldog in the basket. That was until I discovered Rekorderlig’s Swedish School/Svenska Skolan and being French suddenly seemed far too obvious.

Pushing Boundaries: Big Screen Sexuality

It was the mid '80s, I was a child and I remember once sneakily spying on a group of adult female members of my family while they were watching a film. At some point I saw them all shocked and screaming with laughter, because during a semi-erotic scene of the film, the sexual encounter was initiated by the woman undoing the man’s trousers.

Mindy Kaling's New Show, The Mindy Project

Oh, Mindy Kaling, you are wonderful. You make me feel better about myself and my darling little quirks and idiosyncrasies that I’m not meant to have because I read somewhere that they are "bad for feminism". Your book, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, is the book that I’d write given a lucrative publishing deal and the opportunity to hang out with Zooey Deschanel.

Our Top 3 Favourite Batman Video Spoofs

I love a bit of Batman. That gravelly voice, the cool car and that Kevlar bodysuit just appeals to me somehow. Can’t think of why... But what I love even more than the Batman films themselves are the fan-made spoofs – utterly bonkers but completely hilarious.

The London Design Festival 2012

Even as a grown up, it is hard to escape those “back to school” blues that kick in come early September. The best way to deal with them is to plan an action-packed programme of cool things to see and do. And London Design Festival (14-23 September) makes an ideal starting point.
