SOUVENIR: Where Porn Meets Art

By Lori Smith

In the lead up to Valentine's Day, there is much tat on sale. Random crap emblazoned with hearts and a whole host of supposedly sexy gifts are promoted heavily at the start of February. But what if you'd rather spend a bit more to get something really special? What do you get the lover who has everything?

How about a silk bound limited edition book of beautiful drawings and writing, where a donation is made to charity for every purchase? This is no ordinary art book though as the drawings, although extremely delicate, all have a rather adult theme. SOUVENIR is definitely not for prudes!

For the last 18 months, IanBRUCE - artist and singer with The Correspondents - has been busily drawing pornography representing a broad range of physicality, sexuality and sexual practices. Under the name RubiCANE, he has drawn everything from Japanese tentacle erotica to disabled porn.

He is now sharing this work with the world in a book called SOUVENIR, which also includes contributions from several writers, including porn stars, poets and playwrights. CANE has sourced specialists in in pornographic subjects to write short passages - in the form of poems, short stories, confessions, instructions and lists - to sit beside his artwork.

Despite the x-rated nature of the content, CANE has produced a series of beautiful and delicate studies which celebrate and expose the different tastes and desires that modern pornography caters for. CANE's aim for SOUVENIR is:

"To delve and explore people's association and opinion with this pixelated world [...] it is important to question the nature of porn and sex. If you search for porn on the internet you are joining half a billion people in your search at any one time."

CANE was also drawn to the effect porn has, particularly in the ways in which women are treated and portrayed. He was keen to open this up as a discussion, believing it is a topic not addressed as much as it should be. I'm sure this is something that many BitchBuzz readers would be only too happy to discuss!

This book is a celebration of sex in all its diversity. If you are looking for an interesting, thoughtful and sexual gift to give to a lover this Valentine's Day, you really should take a look. Not only is it a beautiful book to own, but sales will also help to support a very good cause. 10% of the proceeds will be donated to the charity Outsiders, which does invaluable work to recognise the sexual needs of disabled people.

An exhibition of images from SOUVENIR is showing at the Society Club in Soho from 14th February, for one month. SOUVENIR is priced at £95 and is available to buy online via www.foxandsquirrel.com, or from the Society Club.
