Why You Should Read 'Perks of Being a Wallflower'

By Kelli Savill

Friday marks the release of highly-anticipated film The Perks of Being a Wallflower staring my favourite teenage witch (Sorry Sabrina!) Emma Watson,Logan Lerman and Ezra Miller. The film adaptation of Stephan Chbosky’s amazing novel will be directed by the man himself - which gives me high hopes for a superb film which will even please its original readers!

For those who haven’t read the book, it’s a real coming of age tale about the trials and tribulations of growing up, love, loss and hope. It was a revelation to my teenage self, and a book I highly urge every young-at-heart, lost soul to pick up. It’s also good if you just want a really good read.

The book is written in letter form to an unknown recipient, by the main character Charlie. On the first page, Charlie says, “I need to know someone out there listens and understands”, which is definitely something that I think resonates with every teenager, and it unfolds into a beautiful story. The book sees lonely Charlie, come alive with a little help from those around him and it melted my heart with its message of friendship which can overcome every obstacle.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower has almost reached cult status, and I’m certain that this film, with such a great cast and directed by its author, is bound to reach the same heights. I predict it’ll become the next Juno or 500 Days of Summer – something every film-lover will cherish.

If you haven’t read the book, I highly recommend you catch it before you run off to see the film. At only 224 pages, it’s a quick read and certainly worth the couple of hours it’ll take you – if only for some amazing music and film references!

“And in that moment I swear we were infinite.”

The Perks of Being a Wallflower will be released in cinemas all over the UK on Friday 3 October
