Irritating "Inspirational" Home Decor

By Cate Sevilla

We already know that I'm not exactly a fan of irritating home decor. You know what I'm talking about, things like "fun" ice, "fun" floral kitchen gloves and "hilarious" kitchen tiles that say things like, "A balanced diet is a cookie in each hand".

However, after a recent trip to Target's Home section, I've re-discovered a new pet peeve in home decorating I have: Inspirational messages and words.

Whether they're in vinyl stickers to place above your bed or stitched on pillows, do you really think someone who comes over to your house is going to be moved to pieces by that framed stitch work you have over your entry way? NO.

Sometimes things like this can look nice. Sometimes a well-placed, inspirational message can be nice. Most times, they're irritating, stupid, and so 2002.

Here are the top six most irritating inspirational bits of decor you can have in your home:

1) "Dance Like No One Is Watching..." Framed Piece

Dance Like...

Firstly, I won't listen to anyone who thinks we'll be inspired from a hideous leopard print wall decoration. Secondly, what if I dance better if I know I have an audience? What then, huh?

2) "Laundry Is Like Life...Loads of Fun" Wall Graphic

Laundy is Loads of Fun

Do you see what they did there? Loads of fun? Like loads of laundry? Tee hee.

3) "Reach For The Stars" Inspirational Wall Sticker

Reach For The Stars

Would it not have made more sense to have it going up the stairs so that it read "reach...for...the...stars" whilst you were climbing the stairs, instead of "stars the for reach"?

4) "Use What Talents You Possess" Inspirational Vinyl Wall Quote

Use What Talents

OK, in case you can't read the whole quote on the image above, allow me:

"Use what talents you possess, the world would be very silent if no birds sang except those who sang best."

I'm not even sure I understand what that means.

5)  "Inspire" "Dream" & "Imagine" Inspired Wire Words

Inspire, Imagine, Dream

These are inspirational words made out of wire and beads. WIRE AND BEADS. I think that says it all.

6) "Life Isn't About..." Vinyl Wall Decal

Life Isn't About...

Again, if you can't read this magnificent quote, please allow me:

"Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass, it's learning to dance in the rain."

Excuse me while I barf everywhere. What is with all of these quotes encouraging us to dance? What about eating? Drinking? I'd rather eat like no one is watching than dance like no one is watching...

I tend to just get embarrassed reading these little sayings. That's too much hope and joy for me.

However, I recently stumbled across a website that allows the customer to create their own "inspirational" saying in vinyl letters. I'm trying to figure out where I can put "Two tears in a bucket, mutha fuck it."

In the rural town where my in-laws live it's all "country" decor and every single shop has an artfully distressed sign saying "Always Kiss Me Goodnight" and it always makes me want to barf.

Words fail me. Do people *really* buy this stuff?

I saw one recently that was in a very straightforward clean font, which was a nice change I must admit. "You Must Do the Thing You Think You Cannot Do. - Eleanor Roosevelt" I think that's about as uncheesy as it gets, but it still kinda' irked me. Reminds me of those church marquees with Thoughts for the Day.

And what if it was a royally shitty day when I just wanted to sit down with a pint and wallow in despair for a bit...I'd be flipping off my own wall or scratching the paint out of the plaster.

Andrea -

It was the "always kiss me goodnight" thing at Target that inspired this post. I almost dropped dead when I saw it. lol
