Food and drink make the best holiday souvenirs. I’m not talking about a hastily purchased bottle of Ouzo from the airport or a bag of smashed up biscotti lurking in the bottom of the suitcase. What I’m getting at is the memory of new and unusual tastes, the experience of playing menu roulette and waiting to see what the waiter brings to the table.

A few years ago, on a flight to Edinburgh I heard a rather distinguished chap ask the flight attendant for a ginger ale with whiskey - and ever since then, I've been hooked. Whiskeys and bourbons are actually quite versatile and mix fabulously with ingredients you might not initially think of, which is precisely why I'm so in love with Jim Beam Honey.

You must have heard the wise advice "don't go shopping when you're hungry." Well I would like to add to that advice by saying do not go grocery shopping after an extra long mind numbing day at work. Why? Because last week I went to do a big shop after work and ended up at home with a bag of veggie chips and a box of arborio rice. That's it.

If you think carrot cake is too dry, too raisin-y or too tasteless, you have had too many crappy carrot cakes, friend. Carrot cake can be airy, moist and delightful if done right. The key is don't over-mix when you add the dry ingredients to the wet. So if you go easy with your wooden spoons you might have all the neighborhood bunnies knocking down your door begging for a slice.

I've been in a real food rut for the past few weeks. Over the weekend, I opened my cupboards and stared for a while. Nothing. Cabinets chock full of food and I could think of nothing to make. So, I took a walk around the block and asked myself a very important question, "When was the last time I had lentils?" I couldn't answer that easily, therefore it had been too long.

I love juice. This isn't news to you if you've spent more than 5 minutes with me at any point in my life. Juice is awesome, and now that I've finally got my own juicer, it's exponentially more awesome because I can create any combination I choose in the comfort of my own kitchen like a tiny juice god. I've been experimenting with all sort of stuff, and below are three of my favorites so far.

There are so many interesting grains out there to experiment with! In the past, I've made mornings more exciting with rice and quinoa, but I thought farro would be a fun thing to try after seeing it on the breakfast menu at Le Pain Quotidien. Hearty and nutty, farro will keep you full until lunch, and cherries and walnuts are one of nature's best combos!
