You meet someone amazing, you go on a few dates, you fall head over heels in love. You're so happy that you just can't stop talking about it. It's a story that I'm sure many of you will recognise, but how do we stop it before we get too bad? When a friend meets some one new and won't shut up about them, it can be so bloody irritating. At the beginning, it's nice that they're happy and you love to share in their joy but, after a while, you start to wish...

It may be news to some people, but women do write about sex. A lot of women! We write about doing it, feeling it and understanding it. We write about the concepts as well as the details. We tell true stories and create tantalising fiction. Occasionally, we like to get together and talk about it too.

Books of sex tips must be really difficult things to write. With most instruction manuals, it's usually pretty straightforward to come up with something about how 'that bit goes there' or 'try it this way', but it doesn't work that way for an intimate subject. Unless you're writing in a comedy fashion, no one really wants step by step guide to sex that reads like a software end user agreement. Authors have to work out who their book is aimed at, and find a tone that suits the audience...

I find it hard to believe that, in a society where women can choose to have have jobs and choose to get married, some people still think that it's only right and proper for a man to propose marriage. Women are supposed to do the swooning and saying yes, not the asking. Apparently. Except today, of course, this one's meant for us girls.

Oh, periods. That wonderful time where your body reminds you that it is probably physically capable of making a baby, given the right ingredients. For some women it's an entire week of pain, for others it's simply a few days of mess. As Ewan McGregor helpfully summarised in Moulin Rouge's Elephant Love Medley, "Love is a many splendored thing! Love lifts us up where we belong! All you need is love!"

Why do some people think that being intensely sexually active is the only option for open-minded adults? If you haven't tried everything then they reckon you must be a prude. If you don't get down to business all the time, then they think there must be something wrong with you. Guess what... that's utter nonsense!

When you're a teenager, losing your virginity is often quite a big thing on your agenda. I remember wondering how I'd find a boyfriend, whether it was easy to kiss like they did in the movies and, later on, what on earth I was going to do when it came round to sex. There was always plenty of advice around, but it never seemed to be the right stuff.

If I asked you "do you tell your partner everything?", what would your answer be? If your reply would be "no, not everything" and you sometimes wonder why your significant other isn't a mind reader, perhaps you should stop and think about that for a while. How can they truly know you if you keep secrets?

As the temperatures drop precipitously, I must adjust my wardrobe and habits accordingly. In urban areas like New York, you can’t beat the cold by hopping from the heated seats of a car to the heated office where you work. You can’t even guarantee a heated home. You have to brave the cold, head on.
