Sexual Healing: Can Sex Cure Headaches?

By Lori Smith

There’s always the danger that, if you leave something until the last minute, something else will crop up to get in the way. Take, for example, the writer who waits until the night before the deadline to write her article, feels a migraine starting and then realises she can’t retire to a darkened room after all.

Sitting on the train home, I was longing for painkillers and sleep. Trying to think about what I was going to write became increasingly difficult because, no matter how many great ideas I have stored up, no one wants to think about sex when they have a headache. Sitting in front of a computer screen and typing is one thing – ouchy yet bearable – but trying to focus on a bit of nooky is downright impossible.

However, we’ve all heard the rumours that sex can relieve headaches, so I figured that it couldn’t hurt to do a quick bit of online research and find out if an orgasm or two might be better than the old paracetamol and ibuprofen trick. It would certainly be a more fun way to banish my headache!

About.com is often the first link to come up when you type questions into Google and they certainly didn’t disappoint me this time. Their article on the subject, entitled Orgasm, Headache and Migraine: Does the "Big O" affect headaches and Migraine?, was extremely informative and cited some useful research. Although it would seem that orgasms are in no way a guaranteed way to relieve the symptoms of a migraine – apparently 49.1% of the quoted study’s participants experienced no relief at all – for those women who did see an improvement, it was impressive.

“For those who obtained relief through orgasm, the level of relief varied, but it is interesting to note that of those who obtained any relief, the largest subset is those who obtained complete relief.”

So you can’t be certain that it will help, but it sounds like it’s worth it if it does. Over on Associated Content, I found out that some types of headaches that are caused by sex are actually the sole effect of intercourse and not necessarily the orgasm itself.

“Therefore, as blunt as it sounds, self-satisfaction is the best cure for headaches or migraines that costs nothing and is entirely safe. Sex is a close second if your headaches or migraines are not of the three above-mentioned varieties.”

Basically, even though it might not work for everyone, it’s most definitely worth a try. Sex and masturbation both help to reduce headaches by encouraging your body to release endorphins, which have a similar effect on your body as morphine. In addition, because orgasms are 100% natural, you won’t overdose or have any complications if you ‘use’ them in conjunction with other medicines. Sounds like win-win to me. I’m off for some more practical research!
