While I’ve never been a huge fan of Valentine’s Day and the veritable explosion of red hearts, roses and pink cards that goes with it, I do like to buy things and I do enjoy treating myself.
Single or not, I have always enjoyed the merchandise that goes with this fake “holiday”. Without Valentine’s Day, I wouldn’t have been able to purchase two mini chocolate swiss rolls with puppy faces on them called “puppy love” today. Or the special edition pink Percy Pig Valentine oversized giant chocolate pig model from marksandspencer.com. I’ve always been a firm believer in treating yourself - whether that means dropping hints for your boyfriend/husband or marching into that shop and taking things into your own hands.
No need to pine for that coffee table book about cats, direct some love towards yourself and head to amazon.co.uk and buy it for yourself dammit! Always wanted a pink soda stream for your kitchen? Today’s the day, my friend.
Once you’ve finished devouring that giant hollow chocolate egg (don't forget to eat whatever remains in the foil wrapper), it’s time for some Valentine’s Day inspiration to sweeten your day up just a little bit. Not sure what you’re pining for at the moment besides more chocolate before your blood sugar takes a terrible crash? Here are a few of the things that I’m currently having a one-sided relationship with - until I click “process payment” of course.

Tortoiseshell cat eye sunglasses, £12, Asos.com
Always a fan of a cat’s eye shaped sunglasses - these can be worn immediately to shield your sensitive eyes from the winter sun. They also remind me of Zsa Zsa Gabor ordering pina coladas at the hotel bar. Want.
Urban Decay Naked 2 eyeshadow palette, £36, Debenhams.com
If any palette deserved its own sequel or even its own prequel, it’s this one. The original Naked palette caused a buying frenzy and the follow-up has five exclusive new shades to add to its taupe/greige repertoire. Even if it may seem a bit steep for eyeshadow - the quality and subtle shimmer are worth it. My eyelids deserve a bit of self-love.
Palm Mirage pencil skirt, £40, Warehouse.co.uk
Despite the fact that my husband and I will be either hitting the local KFC for dinner on Valentine’s Day or even lazier - just scavenging for what’s still hiding in our fridge, I can’t seem to stop buying skirts for spring. Also could not be happier that skirt lengths are longer for 2012, hence I can keep my thighs under wraps for another year. Hurrah.
Forty quid for a cushion you say? Are those cats having a tea party?? No you’re not tripping, this is a real cushion. And I want it. Hint Hint to whoever is out there. Anyone?
Diane Von Furstenberg Saffiano printed iPhone 4 case, £40, Net-a-porter.com
This might seem a bit steep for a phone case but it’s pretty snazzy is it not? Lined in felt, this loud vintage inspired print means it will be easy to find in your handbag. Also compatible with iPhone 4S so no one is left out.
This pretty gold friendship bracelet with haematite studs and a silk cord tie will look great with pretty much anything in your wardrobe - including t-shirt dresses - and is the perfect layering piece. Happy Valentine’s to me.
