I don't know about you guys, but as soon as December rolls around I feel an overwhelming urge for all that glitters.
Now I'm 35, so it's been a few years since it's been socially/professionally acceptable for me to lay on the sparkles but for some reason, it seems to be commonly understood that the usual make up rules do not apply in December.
With this in mind I'd like to share with you some of my favourite seasonal make up shimmers and sparklers.
Although this is listed as an "Instant Visual Flaw Softening Lotion" I use it throughout Winter (sparingly) over foundation to give my skin a slight shimmer. I'm usually matte base all the way, but it looks decidedly odd when the rest of your face is catching the light in such obvious ways. A bargain at only £13, you can use it throughout the miserable seasons, and I've heard it works well mixed with a little bronzer to carry you through the sunnier months should you wish.
A special inclusion as it's unquestionably my favourite Christmas eyeshadow, a silvery white festooned with sparkle! It does have a touch of the 90s about it, and if applied clumsily you might end up looking like an extra from the S Club 7 video, but it's worth the risk. Although you can no longer buy Uzi direct from Urban Decay it's still available in the NY themed "Book of Shadows 3" and easily findable on eBay.
If you want something glam and glittery but a little more grown up, look no further than Illamasqua's nail duo of super festive red and gold glitter. Obviously they can be worn separately or with the gold as a top coat/feature nail. I'm a big advocate of Illamasqua polishes as they go on beautifully and have good staying power. It's also worth checking out their FB page for loads of nail art tutorial ideas. The Nail Duo retails at £24 and can be bought from Illamasqua and ASOS.
In my opinion this is the ultimate Christmas nail polish set. When I first saw it I squeed. It's everything that you could need, and even the names are glittery and festive. Northern Lights and Southern Lights can be worn on their own, as can blizzard , everything else works best as a top coat. Oh, and don't forget, as with all glittery polish, this is gonna be difficult to get off. (The sacrifices we make, eh?) The set can be bought for £20 from the Models Own website, and ASOS are offering their own smaller version featuring 3 polishes from the range.
This one I stumbled across earlier this month at an ASOS event. It actually made me "ooohh" out loud before I realised and stopped. As with all Stila products, the pigment and staying power are great in all 9 of the (varying degrees of wearable) shades.
I like to think of the box as if it's been put in wearing order for Christmas, you start at the beginning of the month with the slightly sparkly/mostly shimmery Bubble Bath, Silk and Bon Bon before things start to get brighter and more festive with Pink Diamond, Marilyn (my personal favourite - an intense pinky sparkler) and Bordeaux before things get slightly more sophisticated in time for New Years with Cashmere, Crushed Velvet and Heart of the Ocean. All are swoonworthy in their own right and the set is retailing at a very reasonable £30.
I hope everyone has a very Merry and somewhat shimmery Christmas!
