Angry Birds Rio: Too Much of a Good Thing?

By Cate Sevilla

Angry Birds is one of the most downloaded free apps, and for a long time I avoided playing it like the plague.

Everyone was talking about it, and I just couldn't be bothered. And now, of course, after trying it, I'm addicted. Maybe it's the stupid little noises they make. Maybe it's how infuriating those damn pigs are. Or maybe it's because I'm a simple being that's easily amused. Perhaps we'll never know.

And just in case my addition wasn't intense enough, there's now news of Angry Birds Rio coming to a games console near you in March 2011. (OH. EM. GEE.)

However, I'm wondering if Rovio is taking people's love of Angry Birds too far, as not only is there an Angry Birds animated series in the works, but there's apparently a pink-themed Valentine's Day version of Angry Birds coming out featuring pink birds and heart-shaped defences to protect those snort-tastic pigs.

Who says romance is dead, eh?

And if that wasn't enough, there's even a collection of stuffed animals, key-chains, and mini Angry Birds toys that make noses when you squeeze them available from March on

Clearly, Rovio and Angry Birds are trying to get as much out of their popularity as possible, and it while from a money perspective it's smart - I'll be intersted to see how much Rovio will be able to squeeze out of their free (albeit incredibly popular) app.
